In this detailed guide, we take you through a specific use case for using the Splitting and Merging features in Geora to give you some inspiration on how you can use them to track your value chain from end to end.

Splitting & Merging

Splitting and Merging is the perfect tool to use when you have multiple assets (like batches of malt barley) that either need to be combined together into a larger batch or split out into multiple smaller batches.

This is also a great way to track multiple commodities in Geora that eventually come together to form a specific product (e.g. to achieve full traceability of a product like beer, you can merge traceability data from each commodity used in production, like malt and hops!)

To help us demonstrate what Splitting and Merging looks like in action, we're going to use the use case of a grain trader who wants to trace the journey of their barley from the farm right through to the consumer.

This includes a stage where individual batches of barley from different farms get combined together (using merging) in a single storage container before being divided onto multiple delivery trucks (using splitting) to continue the journey to the malthouse.

In the video below, Tami walks you through the workflow of Merging multiple assets together and then demonstrates how to split them back out again:

For the written walk through, keep reading!

Here we have multiple assets that represent individual batches of barley that we want to combine now that they've been mixed together at the Storage facility:

To do this, the first step is to click on the Merge Assets button towards the top of our workspace homepage:

From here, we need to search for the assets we want to combine:

Tip: You can use the search functionality to search for things like the Asset ID, Asset Type, or any other relevant fields or data points that's easiest for you!

Then, we use the selector button to the left of each asset we'd like to merge and click Merge towards the bottom right of the page when we're ready:

Geora will then run the merging process to combine the assets together and create a new asset for you that represents the 'co-mingled' (merged) barley:

Now let's jump ahead to the future where the combined batch of barley is ready to be divided and loaded onto multiple delivery trucks to continue the journey to the Malthouse.

To track this journey in Geora, we want to use the Splitting feature!

To do this from our Workspace Homepage we'll click the three dot icon to the left of the asset we want to split and the click Split Asset:

Or alternatively, we can click into the Asset itself, click on the Actions menu towards the top-right hand corner and click Split Asset:

From here, we need to tell Geora how we'd like to split the asset (e.g. in the example below, of the total 1000kg of barley I have available in this asset, I want to create 8 x new 100.00kg assets and keep the remaining 200kg in the existing asset).

After clicking split, Geora will spend a few minutes generating all of the new assets:

From there, you'll find all of your newly created assets (along with the remaining asset, if applicable), available in your Workspace Homepage!

That brings us to the end of our in-depth look at how you can use Splitting & Merging in to achieve full traceability of your commodities in Geora!

We hope this was helpful and got those creative juices flowing on how you might be able to use Splitting & Merging to trace your value chain 🧑
